"Massacre of the Middle-Aged (White) Men" 

메이가 '우리 나라와 더 닮은(more like the country)' 정부를 만들어 보겠다는 취지로 내각을 개편한 이후 편의점 신문 1면의 헤드라인은 이러했다. 영국은 미국과 함께 둘째가라면 서러운 다양한 인종의 사람들이 공존하는 곳이다. 따라서 내각 개편의 방향은 그야말로 '더 영국 같은' 구성; 바로 더 다양한 인종(특히 소수 인종)과 더 많은 여성 멤버로 탈바꿈(?)하는 것이었다. 그러니 기존에 있던 중년의 백인 남성들이 피해자가 되었다는 것은 참으로 논리적이고 자연스러운 해석이 아닐 수 없다. 

내가 1월 10일에 편의점에서 마주한 신문은 'the Daily Mail'이었다. 한편, 'the Times'에서는 “여성과 소수자들을 위한 메이의 압박에 쫓겨난 백인 남성들(White men booted out* in May’s push for women and minorities)”이라는 헤드라인으로 쫓겨나신 분들의 심경을 전달하기도 했다. 단지 백인 남성이라는 이유만으로 축출되거나 승진대상자에서 제외되었다니! 어찌 그들의 심경을 대변하지 않을 수 있단 말인가. ("to claim some felt they had been “hoofed out* or not promoted simply because they are a white male”)  

하지만 Newstatesman 은 지적한다.  

The Mail is lamenting the loss of all the middle-aged white men from the top tiers of government, who have been taken to a special correction unit to learn how to use pronouns and word trigger warnings. Or so you’d think from this front page.

그리고 The Guardian 은 도대체 "Massacre"씩이나 되는 맹공을 받으며 억압받고 있는 타켓이 누구냐고 반문한다. 

Who is the target of this new onslaught of persecution, exclusion and violence? Is it Muslims, people of colour or women? Might it be refugees, gay or disabled people whose plight demands our solidarity?

No, the afflicted group is men. Specifically, white middle-aged men, with extra sympathy demanded for those men guilty of making unwanted sexual advances.

This supposed cull of the pale, male and stale has left a government where all three of those groups remain remarkably well represented.

대량 학살치고는 생존자가 너무 많다는 촌철살인 SNS 위트는 다 이유가 있으니 

바로 여기 개편 후 내각의 모습을 보면 왜 저 신문 1면의 헤드라인이 비판과 조롱의 대상인지 알 수 있다.

확연히, 그저, 새하얀 모습. 

그런데 그냥 그저 하얀 모습만이 문제가 아니다.

'Massacre'라는 단어까지 썼다면 인종은 떠나서라도 중년 '남성'이 정말 큰 숫자로 줄어든(plummeted) 것이어야 한다. 

하지만 그렇지가 않다. 

그래서 The Guardian은 그 숫자들이 참 많이도 떨어졌다며(plunged) "Some massacre"이긴 한 것 같다고 비꼬아 비판하기에 이른다.

덧붙여, 

여기 더 자세한 숫자들을 살펴보기 위한 Newstatesman의 팩트 체크 내용이다;

There has not been a purge of middle-aged men from cabinet. 

내각에서 그렇게 크게 정리된 중년 남성은 없었다. 

Yes, ten of the 11 ministers demoted during the reshuffle were white men, 

그래, 개편 중 조금 더 낮은 직급으로 가게 된 장관 11명 중 10명이 백인 남성이긴해,

but the number of women has only risen by nine 

근데 여성의 숫자가 크게 오른 것이냐하면 또 그건 그렇지 않단 말이지. 겨우 9명 더 많아졌다. (9명이 많아보이는가?)

– there are still more than double the number of men (82, down from 89) than women (38, up from 29), 

– (그럼 전체 숫자를 보자!) 여전히 남성의 수가 '2배' 더 많다. (남성은 89명이었는데 줄어서 82명, 여성은 29명이었는데 늘어서 38명) 

and the average age of ministers has only decreased by a year (51, down from 52).

그리고 장관의 평균 나이는 1년 후울쩍~ 증가. (하하ㅏㅎ)

심지어,

Newstatesman은 감동적이게도 숫자 체크에서 한발 더 들어가 직급, 성향에 따른 심도있는 분석까지 간략하게나마 꼬집어준다. 

That’s on top of the fact that six of the eight women added to the non-cabinet ranks are junior whips – low-profile positions*, with no speaking role in the Commons – and only one woman was promoted to a full cabinet role. 

가장 중요한 사실은 늘어난 8명의 여성 중 6명은 내각에 실제로 참여하지 않는 직급이다. 그나마 딱 한명이 내각 구성원으로 진급했다. 

자, 이제 남녀 구성비를 좀 떠나 소수 인종 문제를 들여다보려고 한다면.. 그럴 필요가 없는게 아주 간단하다.

The cabinet also still has just one member from an ethnic minority background, Sajid Javid, and one fewer gay member with the loss of former Education Secretary Justine Greening.

그냥 딱 한명 있다. 아, 그리고 (젠더 다양성까지!) 우리가 이미 잃은 전 교육부 장관, Sajid Javid가 있었지.. 그는 심지어 얼마 없는 게이 멤버였는데... (흙 ㅜㅜ)

Justine Greening; 그래 그녀도 내각에서 처음으로 커밍아웃한 게이 여성이었는데 말이다! 

이 매력터지는 언론의 마지막 삼연타! 

바로 이미 영국 사회에서 많이 지적되어왔던 계급에 따른 차등 교육과 이에 따른 직업의 계급화 혹은 같은 직업군에서도 학벌에 따른 차별.

PLUS the cabinet is posher*. 

Research by the Sutton Trust shows that there are now more privately-educated ministers than there were in May’s original cabinet – up to 34 per cent from 30 per cent in 2016. 

the Sutton Trust의 조사 결과에 따르면 이제 내각에는 개편 전보다 '사립 교육을 받은' 장관들이 더 많아졌다.  

The most high-profile loss in this context was Greening, the first Education Secretary to have been educated at a comprehensive school since that system began. 

이러한 학벌(?) 측면에서 볼 때, 종합 중등 학교에서 교육받은 최초의 교육부 장관 Greening이 가장 높은 직급에서의 손실이 되겠다.  

The number of Oxbridge-educated ministers has also increased, from 44 per cent of May’s first cabinet having attended Oxford or Cambridge university to 48 per cent.

옥스브릿지-옥스포드와 캠프릿지의 합성- 학벌 장관 수는 개편 전 44%에서 개편 후 48%로 되려 늘었다.   

[참고] 종합 중등 학교(comprehensive school)와 대비되는 학교 형태는 중등 학교(grammar school)로 종합 중등 학교가 취업에서 대학 진학까지 다양한 가능성을 염두해두고 교육하는 반면 그래머 스쿨 중등 학교는 대학 진학을 목표로 대학 진학을 위한 교육을 제공하는 학교이다.  

"So the Mail needn’t worry. The establishment is restored."

끝으로 The Guardian 은 이번 내각 개편을 마주하며 아주 흥미로운 과거의 경고 하나를 회상한다. 

작년, 영국 기반 다국적 기업 테스코(Tesco)의 회장이 백인 남성이 의사회에서 멸종 위기(an “endangered species”)에 놓일지도 모른다고 경고한 것.  여성과 소수 인종을 향해 아찔한 진자운동을 하는 것을 보고 있자니(now that “the pendulum has swung very significantly” towards women and ethnic minorities) 그런 위기감이 생겼다고 하는데.. 아, 이 어찌 도깨비같이 로맨틱한 언어 선택인가! pendulum 뜻 몰라서 그냥 문맥으로 이해하고 넘어갈 뻔 했는데 사전에서 찾아보고 정말 감탄을 금치 못했다. 

참고로, 그의 이사회는 총 12명의 이사진 중 9명이 남성, 3명이 여성이라고 한다. 소수 인종은 제로... (이.. 이 사람 머지?? 회장씩이나 하면서 이런 쓸데없는 위기 의식을 왜 가지고 사는 걸까. 미련 곰탱이 같으니라구..... ) 그래서 The Guardian이 그의 이사진 구성을 가리키는 말; "고작 아홉 명의 남자들(a mere nine white men)," 그리고 "탐욕스럽게 터무니없이 많은 세 자리를 독차지해온 여성들(a whopping three places had been hogged by women)." 이런 반어법이라니.. 너무 멋지다. 

이런 일련의 사건들을 보고 있자니, 영국도 한국 못지 않게 골때리게 흥미로운 나라다. "분명한 불균형과 불공평을 고치려는 가장 미미한 노력에도 반발(a resistance to even the most modest action to correct an obvious imbalance or injustice)"을 일삼고 있으니 말이다. 아주 명확한 불균형과 불공평을 인식하지 못한 채 혹은 인식을 거부한 채 되려 피해 의식에 사로잡혀 역차별을 운운하는 사람들.. 우리나라에도 많지 않은가. 페미니스트를 무슨 과격 분자로 몰아놓는 것이 그리 생소한 일도 아니라니. 안그래도 이래저래 충격이다 요즘. 딱 하나 분명히 해야할 것은 역차별이라는 것은 차별의 대상이 차별에서 벗어났을 때 적용할 수 있는 것이다. 여성이 차별에서 벗어나 완전히 공평해지고 평등해지면 그때 남성은 적어도 역차별을 당할 수 있는 것이다. 어찌 현재의 저질스러운 불평등 불공형 불균형 상황에서 역차별로 오히려 양성 평등의 본질을 더 흐리려 하냔 말이다.  

Sunder Katwala of British Future puts it well when he says: “Those already at the top who find the gradual adjustment from 90% to 70% of leadership roles too dizzying should get challenged.”

이미 최고의 자리에 서 있으면서 리더십 역할에서 (남성이) 90%에서 70%로 점진적인 조정을 겪은 것에 눈이 핑핑 돌아가는 사람들은 문제 의식을 가져야 한다. 

That’s all we’re talking about here. 

May’s supposed purge of the white men has left a government that remains 68% male and 92.5% white. 

It is not a massacre. 

It is a teeny, tiny, baby step in the right direction.
